Building confidence through music

Music provides a safe space for self expression but players of any age can find it daunting performing in front of an audience.  Myself included!  Having a supportive teacher can help students overcome stage fright and gain confidence.  To encourage my students to think beyond the notes, I ask them what emotion they want the listener to feel when they play. I love to hear students express joy through a bright melody or sorrow through a lyrical ballad and by focusing on emoting they are no longer concerned about missing a note.

For many of my beginner students, our lessons are their first experience in private instruction and many can feel put on the spot or vulnerable. I bring patience and understanding to all my lessons while encouraging my students to be articulate and to form their own musical opinions. Music fosters empathy and emotional awareness while nurturing the creative mind. Students learn that their voice matters and that the audience wants to hear their authentic self, giving them the confidence boost to enjoy performing for others.
